Descripción Histórica:

Exemplifying a great influence of textile design, this work takes on a quilt-like nature, as though bits of fabric have been sewn together to create an abstract composition. Delaunay's lines undulate and flow, guiding the viewer's eye around the work without landing on a single focal point. Perhaps most notable is Delaunay's strong use of color: brilliant reds, blues, and greens in varied hues emerge from this work and capture the viewer's attention with their liveliness and boldness. Of the importance of color in her works Delaunay states, "The real new painting will begin when people understand that colour has a life of its own, that the infinite combinations of colour have a poetry and a language much more expressive than the old methods. It is a mysterious language in tune with the vibrations, the life itself, of colour. In this area, there are new and infinite possibilities" (Baron &Damase, p. 199).

Created in 1961, this original gouache and pochoir on paper is hand signed and dated by Sonia Delaunay (1885-1979) in the lower right. Numbered from the edition of 50 in the lower left.

About the Framing:
Museum-grade conservation framed in a contemporary black and gold frame with silk mats and optical grade Plexiglas. The sleek, modern simplicity of the frame highlights the quilt-like patterns that appear within the work.

Sonia Delaunay biografía

Sonia DelaunaySonia Delaunay (1885 - 1979)

Sonia Delaunay (also known as Sonia Terk) is a Jewish-French artist best known for her use of strong colors and geometric shapes. Along with her husband, artist Robert Delaunay (1885-1941), she became involved with the Orphism Art Movement, a movement that viewed painting as the bringing together of a sensation of bright colors. She worked in a variety of mediums such as painting, textile, design, and stage set design and often integrated furniture, fabrics, wall coverings, and cloth into her works.

Sonia Delaunay was born as Sarah Stern on November 14, 1885 in a small Ukrainian town called Gradizhsk. She was separated from both her father and her mother at the age of five when she was adopted by her wealthy, Jewish uncle Henri Terk, a powerful lawyer in St. Petersburg. Henri Terk renamed her Sonia Terk and offered her a life of social prominence and higher education.

At age 16, she was enrolled in one of St. Petersburg's most respected secondary schools, where an art teacher acknowledged her talent. Delaunay was sent to Germany to study further and soon entered the Karlsruhe Academy of Fine Arts where she studied from 1903-1905. After school, she moved to Paris, the center of arts and entertainment, where she quickly took up an active social life. In Paris, Delaunay met Wilhem Uhde, a prominent art dealer and collector. They were married on December 5, 1908 but soon divorced in 1910 when Sonia fell in love with and married Robert Delaunay, a fellow artist. Often living in the shadow of her husband, Delaunay's career took off after his death in 1941. She was the first living female artist to have a retrospective exhibition at the Louvre, Paris in 1964, and in 1975, she was officially named an officer of the French Legion of Honor.
