An intricately executed study of the human form, the intimate scale of this work entices the viewer to examine the image at an up close viewpoint. Full of detailed line work, this piece illustrates the Master of the Die’s skill in creating a multi-figural composition in complex figural positioning with precise detailing. Created in 1532, this original engraving is printed on a fine laid paper. The piece's date, and a second notation ‘Ant. Sal. Exc.’, appears at the bottom center margin. Two collector’s marks, ‘Dr. Herwig’ and ‘Buel Dado B.29’ appear on the reverse, and two attached marks also accompany the work: ‘Buel Dado, Bartsch 29 Nv 325,’ and ‘324 Master of the Die B. 29’. Latin text at the bottom reads ‘Furor Fit Lesa Sepius Patientia.’ The two directly translatable words, furor and patientia, loosely translate this phrase to “passionate endurance.” This title is perfectly appropriate to this piece, as the delicately etched, beautiful cherubs struggle together to save a fallen cherub from an aggressive male beast. With a minor margin tear that does not affect the image, this is a fine dark impression! This artist can be understood in relation to his contemporaries Albrecht Durer, Raimunid, Beham, Northern European artists, and artists of the Italian Renaissance. Catalogue Raisonné & COA: 1) A Masterworks Certificate of Authenticity will be included with the sale of this work. About the Framing: | |
